THE FORMALIST, installation view, Cornerstore gallery, Chicago, USA, 2016

In The Formalist Auerbakh disrupts and subverts established Contemporary Art hierarchies by re-mixing images from the blog “Contemporary Art Daily.” Auerbakh appropriated and formally categorized artworks from the image archive of the internationally-respected blog, which was founded in Chicago and until recently based just a few blocks from cornerstore. As a limited-edition zine designed like fashion and lifestyle magazines, The Formalist de-contextualizes and devalues photographs of artworks from leading contemporary art spaces, taking them from a highly regarded curated online platform into a cheeky game of formal comparison. Presented as an all-encompassing installation or Gesamtkunstwerk, The Formalist exemplifies Auerbakh’s playful criticality and art system referentiality, while also pointing to a Chicago-based institution and visual language.
